Find out what factors are involved in determining whether you have a high-risk pregnancy.
It can be all too exciting the moment you see the strip turn pink. While we certainly wish that all pregnancies were easy, unfortunately, there are just some women who experience high-risk pregnancies. From the office of our Jackson, MS Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Robert Naef, III, find out what makes a pregnancy high-risk.
So, what exactly does high risk mean for a pregnancy?
This means your obstetrician has performed the proper exams, has discussed your medical history and has determined that you or your baby may be more susceptible to health issues during your pregnancy. If this is the case, you can be referred to Dr. Naef for proper treatment and monitoring.
What could make my pregnancy a high risk?
There are quite a few factors that go into determining whether you might have a high-risk pregnancy or not. You may have a high-risk pregnancy if you have these health issues:
- High blood pressure
- Kidney disorder
- Heart valve problems
- Sickle cell disease
- Rheumatoid arthritis
Conditions that can cause a woman to have a high-risk pregnancy include if:
- She is under 17 years old or older than 35 years old
- She is pregnant with multiple babies
- She has had three or more miscarriages
- She’s had issues with preterm labor, seizures or preeclampsia in past pregnancies
- She is taking certain medications
If I have one or more of these factors what should I do?
