Nothing is more important than finding an obstetrician that you can turn to for quality care.

If you just found out that you are expecting, congratulations! This is an exciting time. Of course, the next step is to find an obstetrician that Pregnancy-Ultrasoundcan provide you with the proper care and monitoring you need for a healthy pregnancy and easy delivery. It’s normal to have questions along the way regarding your pregnancy. That’s why our Jackson, MS, maternal-fetal medicine specialist Dr. Robert Naef, III has provided you with answers to some of the top questions we receive from our patients.

When should I first see an obstetrician?

Once you receive a positive home pregnancy test it’s time to call your OBGYN for your first prenatal appointment. This appointment will more than likely fall around the 6.5 week of your pregnancy. An ultrasound will also be performed during this visit to determine the health of the fetus, as well as the prospective due date.

What is a maternal-fetal specialist?

A maternal-fetal specialist is an OBGYN that has received additional training and education to be able to handle high-risk pregnancies.

When should I turn to an MFM?

While women won’t immediately turn to an MFM for regular obstetric care, if your obstetrician has deemed you a high-risk pregnancy then you may want to turn to our maternal-fetal medicine OBGYN in Jackson, MS, for more specialized care. A woman may be a high-risk pregnancy if she:

  • Is over the age of 35
  • Is carrying more than one fetus (multiple births)
  • Is overweight or obese
  • Has chronic preexisting conditions such as heart disease or diabetes
  • Experiences preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, or hypertension due to pregnancy
