If you recently found out that you're pregnant, you may be wondering when you should see an obstetrician. Robert W. Naef, III, M.D., your Jackson obstetrician, explains when you should first visit your doctor and what you can expect when you receive obstetric care during that visit.

When should the first visit take place?

Your first visit to the obstetrician should take place when you are about eight weeks pregnant. Your doctor may want to see you earlier if you have a medical condition that could complicate your pregnancy, such as diabetes. Earlier visits are also recommended if you previously had a problem pregnancy, are experiencing bleeding or abdominal pain, or have severe vomiting or nausea due to morning sickness.

What will happen during the visit?

During the visit, your doctor will:

  • Provide you with an estimated date of delivery
  • Review your medical history and ask about any chronic conditions or diseases you may have
  • Find out if you have recently been exposed to any contagious diseases
  • Ask for details about previous pregnancies
  • Request information on medications and nutritional supplements you take and ask if you smoke, drink or take recreational drugs
  • Ask if birth defects or genetic disorders run in your family or in the baby's father's family
  • Explain options for prenatal genetic testing
  • Answer any questions you may have

You will also receive a pelvic examination and a Pap smear during the visit. You'll be asked to provide a urine sample, which is used to detect a variety of problems that can affect pregnancy, including bladder and kidney infections, diabetes, dehydration, and preeclampsia. Your doctor may also recommend blood tests to check for anemia, determine your blood type and RH status, test for sexually transmitted diseases and determine if you are immune to chicken pox and German measles.
